How are funds raised and where are they spent?

The Qualicum Beach Fire and Ice Street Festival generates its funding from a number of sources including:

Merchant Sponsors

Businesses from Qualicum Beach, Parksville and Nanaimo contribute cash. In many cases merchants sponsor specific ice carvers to be located in front of their business. Other sponsor organizations that are not located directly on the festival streets make general contributions to support the festival.

Special sponsors:

A number of sponsors provide another level of funding, sometimes for specific purposes. For example B.C. Ferries have donated ferry passes top offset the costs of the ice carvers who travel from the mainland. The Town of Qualicum Beach and some local businesses provide services that reduce the cash costs associated with the event.

Chili cup sales:

Chili cups and spoons are sold to the festival audience. These cups allow individuals to sample the chili from each and every chili stand.

The revenue is applied to:

  • Advertising, publicity, banners and signs.
  • Financial support to carver and entertainers to offset travel costs.
  • The purchase of blocks of ice for the carvers.
  • Prizes and trophies.
  • Printing and photocopying.
  • Equipment rentals and replacements.
  • On site first aid services.
  • Insurance.

What are you doing about the environmental impact?

With thousands of visitors taking part in the annual Fire and Ice Street Festival each year, we are taking steps to remove the impact we make on our landfill.

The Fire & Ice festival committee is committed to reducing the waste and carbon footprint of the festival over the next several years.

2009 will be the last year that Styrofoam cups will be used. (We are using up our remaining stock this year).
2009 will be last time we will use plastic spoons.

From 2010:

We will provide only biodegradable cups for the chili.
We will provide only biodegradable spoons (corn or similar)
All garbage bags used will be biodegradable.

The amount of paper products used including printing will be reduced.
We will move to encourage more online registration and publicity to reduce paper usage.
