Ice Carving Judges for 2011
Bruce Bird is a self taught antler carver whose work is currently carried at the Path Gallery (Whistler), the Spirit Gallery (Horseshoe Bay), Sun Spirit Gallery (West Vancouver), and the Eagle Feather Gallery in Victoria. His pieces have found their way to various parts of Canada, the United States and Europe. Bruce trained as a leather carver and saddle maker in the 1970's but switched to carving antler 5 years ago, something he first tried as a teenager. One of Bruce's pieces was awarded third prize in the Expert category at the Central Fraser Valley carving competition in May of 2009. Mike Rebar started to become serious about stone sculpting in 2000 when he moved to Vancouver Island. He sculpts local granite and marble which he harvests on Vancouver Island and Quadra Island. He sees the shape inside the stone and carves everything away until it emerges. Mike uses both traditional hand tools and carbide chisels and diamond blades in the process. He finishes the details with files, rasps, diamond burr, and wet and dry sanding, followed by a waxing. Mike likes to do free form realistic designs that continue to evolve as he works the stone. Mike is well known for his water features and garden art which are in private collections all over North America |
